When do gutters need replacing?

Guttering tries to keep roofs leak-free by providing a clear path for rainwater. If the system stops working as it should, it can cause all kinds of problems for your roof and property. While guttering issues can usually be fixed with a clearance, if the pipes have become damaged or reached the end of their lifespan, it may be time to upgrade.

Here are some of the signs your gutters need replacing.

Recurring repairs

From winter roof maintenance to keeping on top of essential repairs, spotting problems early can save you time and expense further down the line. However, if your gutters and downspouts have recurring issues, it may be a sign that they need replacing with a modern material.

Visible gutter damage

Can you see visible cracks or fractures in your guttering? This type of damage is hard to repair and often leads to roof leaks. This can cause both roof and property damage, especially if water is spilling onto your fascias.

Rusty guttering

One of the signs that gutter materials have reached the end of their lifespan is rust, usually affecting metal gutters and fixtures. Sometimes, if you haven’t spotted rusty fixings, you may suddenly find rogue screws around the outside of your property if they’ve come loose or broken. Unfortunately, once rust takes hold, it can cause the metal to deteriorate fast and even break, damaging your guttering system indefinitely.

Mould in your loft or attic space

If there’s mould or mildew in your loft, there could be a problem with your guttering. Your gutters may no longer be efficient at transporting rainwater away from your property or have formed small gaps, resulting in water ingress in your loft or attic space. This creates the perfect environment for mould to thrive.

Sagging gutters

If your system is no longer fit for purpose, it may not be robust enough to hold the weight of lots of rainwater and any debris (like leaves and grit) that makes its way into the system. A roofer can check why your gutters are sagging, as sometimes tightening the brackets can help (if they’ve come loose) rather than a full replacement. You may also spot your gutters overflowing, which may need a debris clearance to correct.

Water damage to your property and grounds

If your gutters and downpipes aren’t delivering an effective drainage system, the additional water must go elsewhere. This includes down the side of your building or around your property. Look for signs of watermarks and discolouration on your home’s exterior, indicating moisture damage. You may also find waterlogged soil in your garden and in extreme cases, problems with your property’s foundations.
